A Magical Journey Through Costa Rica’s Hidden Communities

Imagine spending 10 days in the heart of Costa Rica, not in its lush rainforests or on its pristine beaches, but in the often-overlooked communities surrounding San José. This was the incredible experience we had accompanied by world-class Las Vegas magician Jen Kramer.

Our journey took us through neighborhoods like Los Guidos, Tirrases, and La Carpio, and to towns such as Alajuelita, Cartago, and Zona de los Santos. We covered over 600 kilometers without truly leaving the metropolitan area of San José, except for one excursion. These are places that tourists rarely visit, yet they hold stories of resilience, hope, and now, a touch of magic.

Over 2,000 children attended our shows, their reactions a testament to the power of wonder and imagination. For many, this was their first encounter with magic, and the joy on their faces was truly priceless. Watching Jen Kramer, a seasoned Las Vegas performer, adapt her skills to these unconventional stages was both inspiring and heartwarming.

Our local magician, Diego Vargas, who initiated our education chapter in 2016, led this magical expedition. But perhaps the most beautiful aspect of our trip was the presence of Adal Villalobos, an alumnus from our first group in Tirrases, taught by Diego himself. Adal, now a promising performer, is living proof of our program’s impact. It was a pleasure to witness his growth and to see him take us to two new education chapters hosted by our local allies: La Cometa and Lifting Hands.

These local NGOs now host our magic classes, with Adal as the teacher. This full-circle moment—watching our alumni teach a new generation of students—was arguably the most significant part of our journey. The experience was made even more special when Jen Kramer, a successful Las Vegas magician, gave a private lesson to our new students. Such moments are truly invaluable.

Our Global Programs Director, Carlos López, also joined us on this transformative trip. This marks our second journey with Jen, following her visit to India in 2017. We hope it won’t be the last, as the magic continues to spread, bringing light and wonder to communities often left in the shadows.
